The Miners Action Committee and the United Steelworkers of America met with labour minister Paul Shelley earlier this week.

The asbestos mine at Baie Verte After years of stalled talks and negotiations, both groups believe the meeting might lead to more settlements.

The mine site was developed in the 1950s, and was run by a succession of owners before it closed permanently in 1995.

Miners and their families have been concerned about the health consequences of asbestos for decades.
