Some of the sick have lost jobs.

For a guy whose respirator recently tested positive for asbestos, David Farrell doesn't seem particularly bent out of shape.

"I'll never live long enough to die from it anyway," said Farrell, a 52-year-old construction worker from Winston-Salem.
