For almost three decades, a political answer to the barrage of claims arising from exposure to cancer-causing asbestos has eluded lawmakers.

Meanwhile, the longest-running legal brawl over a workplace hazard in U.S.

history grinds on with no end in sight.

Speaking at a workshop on auto technology and the transport environment on March 21 in Hanoi, Nguyen Minh Dong, a Vietnamese German who was once a design specialist for German automaker Volkswagen, said that the importation of used cars to Vietnam beginning May 1, 2006 would not turn Vietnam into a rubbish dump as some people have warned.

Foreign made used cars ‘cleaner’ than locally made cars In fact, cars manufactured in Japan, Western Europe and the US that are less than five years old prove to be much better than the cars made by automobile joint ventures in Vietnam.

According to Mr Dong, in terms of environmental protection, imported used cars will be ‘cleaner’ than locally made new brand cars.

For the last five years, the Euro 4 standard for exhaust fumes from vehicles and other strict standards have been required in the world’s developed countries.

For example, automobiles have to be equipped with a smoke filtration system, which converts 98% of the poisonous exhaust fumes into harmless ones.

The governments of those countries also ask manufacturers to equip their products with petrol vapour filtration in order to prevent the petrol vapour escaping from the petrol tank and harming drivers.
