NE.What it means: West Hills was ordered to pay $45,000 and a $400 assessment fee for the federal crime and $18,600 in lieu of a state penalty.

Plus, West Hills paid $60,000 to do the proper asbestos abatement after the demolition.

Three other Salem companies were fined in connection with related asbestos violations.Why it matters: Asbestos, which has no safe level of exposure, can cause three lung diseases, including cancer, when the fibers are inhaled.

It usually takes 15 to 30 years for a disease to develop.

Penalty The U.S.

Attorney General's office recommended that the $45,000 federal fine in the Salem asbestos case be given to the Oregon Governor's Fund for the Environment, a sustained granting fund established to benefit the coastal areas, rivers and streams in Oregon.

It is part of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
