Officials will check work
Wednesday, March 22, 2006
WORK to remove asbestos from the Nadi Market will be checked by Labour officials after concerns were raised about conditions workers were being subjected to. Even though the ministry refuted claims council workers involved in the removal of asbestos from the market's ceiling were not given proper equipment, it agreed to carry out an inspection to put concerns to rest.A concerned member of the public called on the ministry to carry out the inspection, claiming council employees along with contractors involved in the operation were working in unsafe conditions.Western divisional labour officer Mateo Daurewa said he was confident all work at the market was OHS compliant because a ministry unit from Suva was supervising the operation. He said the workers were provided with the proper equipment to carry out the task. He said contractors were only allowed into sections that were already cleared of the cancer causing asbestos. The work will cost $550,000. Shortly before he flew into India in late February, French President Jacques Chirac ordered the ship to take a U-turn, with the French Supreme Court suspending that country's decision to let the ship proceed to Alang.
