And, since the topplings of Saddam's vainglorious statues, the victories have not been chest-thumpers in the manner of, say, Jimmy Doolittle's Tokyo raid that cheered the homefront in the dark early days of World War II.

On it all goes.

Dedicated slaughterers wreak horrors.

Roadside explosives pick off our troops.

Bomber squads fell women and children.

Tribal hatreds roil and murderous furies erupt in the streets.

Politicians dither.

Many a day there is when it all looks hopeless.

That is not the whole story, of course.

Three years-plus ago, it could scarcely have been imagined that post-Saddam Iraq would today have in place an elected legislature, however balky a contraption that body is; that rogue Libya would throw down its weapons programs; that the suffering peoples of Lebanon would rise up against their Syrian oppressors.
