Crafton
The borough's trash collector, Waste Management Inc., will begin to monitor collections more closely to encourage participation in the recycling program. Council President Ed Stewart complained that many people were not recycling. He said the borough received a payment of only $864 last year from Waste Management as part of a percentage payback arrangement in the contract. Recycling is required by ordinance and failure to properly recycle results in lost revenue for the borough. People who don't recycle will be identified through spot checks conducted by the trash collector and will receive warning letters. Newsprint has been added to recyclable items. Betsy Martin, of Crafton, called for better enforcement of ordinances to eliminate a growing problem with trash and litter. Ms. Martin complained that people were throwing trash on the streets and that they should be fined. She suggested that trash bins in Crafton Park be screened to improve the area's appearance and said trash containers were needed at a number of places in the borough. Ellwood City A federal public health agency gathering information about a former play area which may have been contaminated with asbestos will hold a community meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Ellwood City municipal auditorium, 525 Lawrence...
