Mesothelioma, an incurable lung cancer caused by asbestos, is a major killer in Barking and Dagenham because of the industries that were once based in the borough.

The first national Mesothe-lioma Action Day, set up by the British Lung Foundation, was held last week.

More women die of mesothelioma here than anywhere else in the country, mainly due to the Cape Asbestos factory in Barking.

For men the death rate is three times higher, only towns with major dockyards have seen more deaths.
