by News 13 3/7/2006 Last year, 1,670 people died in Colorado from lung cancer.

Most were smokers, but some had never touched tobacco.

The El Paso County Health Department, the American Lung Association and Penrose Cancer Center estimate that 10 to 20 people who have never smoked will die of lung cancer in El Paso County this year compared to nearly 300 current and former smokers who will die of the disease.

Lung cancer is random and kills quickly.

While 75-90% of cases are associated with cigarette smoke, doctors still see patients who have never smoked that have advanced and aggressive lung cancer.

Oncology Specialist Dr.

James Young at the Penrose Cancer Center is one of those doctors.

He told News 13’s Karla Shotts that the quality of air could create a slight risk for cancer.

“It correlates to smoking rate and population and to a lesser degree, the quality of the air,” said Dr.
